The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty: Korea’s Most Cherished Historical Record

The World’s Longest Historical Record

Comprising 1,893 volumes and approximately 15 million characters, the Annals stand as the longest historical record dedicated to a single dynasty. The Annals were based on sacho (draft histories), confidential records kept by royal historians during each king’s reign. These drafts were so sacred that even the king was forbidden to read them, ensuring their impartiality. The historians documented everything from weather patterns and natural disasters to political decisions and even the king’s private life, adhering to strict standards of neutrality.

Efforts to Protect the Annals

The Annals are far more than a historical archive—they represent the essence of Korea’s cultural and national identity. To ensure their preservation, the Joseon government established four sago (repositories) across the nation, each housing duplicate copies of the records.

During the Imjin War (Japanese invasions of Korea), many repositories were destroyed. However, scholars and officials risked their lives to save the surviving records. Thanks to their courage, copies stored in Jeongjoksan Sago (now on Ganghwa Island) and Taebaeksan Sago were preserved for future generations.
