Italy Travelogue(3/17) / Orvieto Cable Car(3/17)
Orvieto Cable Car
September 4, 2024 (Wednesday)
I arrived in Orvieto around 3 PM.
This medieval city, located in the Umbria region of Italy, is perched on a rocky hill. Historically, the elevated location was chosen to defend against foreign invasions.
Exploring Orvieto by Cable Car
To experience the charm of this medieval city, I took the cable car.
The ride up the steep incline was smooth, and the view of the orchards cascading along the hillside was enchanting.
At the top station, banners displayed photos from festivals that reimagine Orvieto’s medieval past.
Next to the station stands the Albornoz Fortress, a historical landmark.
Albornoz Fortress
The Albornoz Fortress is strategically built on a steep cliff, making it a formidable defense structure against enemy attacks.
The view from the fortress was stunning: a panorama of brown-toned villages and lush green trees created an atmosphere of tranquility.
After exploring the fortress, I headed to the Orvieto Cathedral.
Orvieto Cathedral
The Orvieto Cathedral, a 14th-century masterpiece, features a golden façade adorned with radiant mosaics. Inside, the chapel boasts breathtaking frescoes.
The cathedral’s marble exterior is a blend of opulence and dignity, making it a striking example of medieval architecture.
The striped stone patterns along the sides of the building add a distinctive and sophisticated touch.
Inside, the intricate paintings and sculptures exude a timeless elegance.
I explored the shops near the cathedral, which offered a variety of interesting goods.
Afterward, I stopped at a café to enjoy a glass of fresh orange juice before wandering through the narrow alleys.
Sometimes, I pause to rest while walking.
Walking along the cobblestone streets felt like stepping into the past. The worn tiles seemed to carry the echoes of history, making the stroll even more enjoyable.
Eventually, I took the elevator back to the starting point.
I took a limousine bus to Chianciano Terme, where my next hotel was located. The journey took about 50 minutes.
Hotel Alexander Palme
The Alexander Palme Hotel, my second accommodation, is situated in Chianciano Terme. Its elegant exterior was the first thing that caught my eye.
Dinner began with appetizers—pizza and drinks—served at outdoor tables. The colorful fruit drink, perfectly balanced between sweetness and tartness, was a refreshing start to the meal.
At 7:30 PM, I enjoyed a hearty dinner in the hotel’s restaurant.
The menu featured tender chicken steak with a curry sauce, served alongside potatoes and bread. Balsamic sauce added a pleasant contrast to the richness of the dish.
Dessert was a sweet, creamy ice cream cake—a perfect way to end the meal.
Sharing dinner with my travel companions was a delightful experience, filled with laughter and conversation.
After dinner, I explored the area around the hotel. Unfortunately, by 9 PM, most shops had already closed, so I returned to the hotel.
The Alexander Palme Hotel was a charming and well-maintained place, offering a peaceful and comfortable end to the day.
