Italy Travelogue Venice Water Taxis and Burano Island (8/17)

St. Mark’s Square and Clock Tower

St. Mark’s Square was bustling with people.

Interestingly, this iconic square was originally an orchard. Around 828 AD, when Christians in Alexandria, Egypt, faced persecution, merchants secretly transported the remains of Mark the Evangelist to the Republic of San Marino. A church was built next to the orchard in Venice to house the relics, and the orchard was eventually transformed into what we now know as St. Mark’s Square.

The winged lion on the clock tower represents Mark the Evangelist and was also featured on the flag of the Republic of Venice.

Even the Venice Film Festival’s trophy incorporates a lion sculpture, reflecting this historic emblem.

Shops Around St. Mark’s Square

The square is surrounded by a variety of shops offering everything from luxury goods to Venetian masks.

We passed stores selling glass crafts, beautifully patterned bags, and umbrellas before stopping at a gelato shop.

The gelato, made with natural ingredients, was perfectly sweet and refreshing.

Water Taxi to Burano Island

From the main island’s pier, we boarded a water taxi to Burano Island.

The ride started in open waters, moved through narrow canals, and then returned to the vast sea as we sped toward Burano.

The water taxi was incredibly fast and exhilarating.

The weather was beautiful, and the sky’s scattered clouds created a picture-perfect scene.

On one of the man-made islands, we passed by an abandoned building, standing alone and forgotten amidst the water.

Burano Island: A Colorful Haven

As we approached Burano, its vividly colored houses came into view, creating a striking and cheerful atmosphere.

The colorful homes are said to have been inspired by local fishermen who painted their boats in bright, distinctive colors to easily identify them.

Burano gained even more attention after featuring in a music video by Korean singer IU, further boosting its popularity.

I took photos of charming flowerpots outside houses and captured the unique hues of the walls. The island felt like a natural photo spot, with its colorful homes providing the perfect backdrop. I edited nine of my favorite photos to highlight the island’s vibrant charm.

I wandered around the island, taking photos against the colorful walls of various houses and later edited nine of my favorite shots.

The vibrant, multicolored walls felt like a natural backdrop for a photo zone, adding a unique charm to every shot.

After exploring Burano, we returned to the water taxi. The ride was fast, refreshing, and smooth, with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean.

Interestingly, the sea water was so clear and odorless that it felt more like a river. Passing under a grand bridge, we eventually returned to the pier where our journey began.

Dinner at Trattoria Panda

Around 6 PM, we had dinner at Trattoria Panda, a cozy restaurant located on the Venetian mainland.

A “trattoria” is a type of restaurant that specializes in regional cuisine, and this one stood out for its wide range of vegetarian-friendly options.

The table was already set for our group, featuring fresh Italian bread, ripe tomatoes, and an abundance of vegetables.

The seafood pasta with clams was a highlight, offering a rich, savory flavor. The pasta was perfectly cooked, with a buttery, aromatic taste.

Another standout dish was the fried fish, which paired wonderfully with balsamic sauce.

We also ordered Italian draft beer. It had a smooth, grainy flavor without the bitterness often found in other beers. The crisp finish complemented the richness of the pasta, balancing the flavors and refreshing the palate.

Panorama Marghera Supermarket

After dinner, we visited Panorama Marghera, a large supermarket in Venice.

Panorama Marghera

Address: Via Sertorio Orsato, 13/15, 30175 Venezia VE, Italy

Hours:

Monday–Saturday: 8:00 AM–9:00 PM

Sunday: 9:00 AM–9:00 PM

Phone: +39 041 2584211

This supermarket is similar to large retail chains in South Korea, such as E-Mart or Homeplus, offering a wide variety of products.

Small wheeled carts made shopping convenient, although larger carts were also available.

While shopping, I decided to buy flat peaches. Shoppers are required to bag their own produce and print a barcode at self-service kiosks. Navigating the Italian-language instructions was a challenge, but a friendly local helped me successfully purchase the peaches.

After an enjoyable shopping trip, we returned to our hotel, the Point Hotel, to end the day.
