[Lunch Review] Amberjack Sashimi, Gray Mullet Sashimi, and Cod Soup – The True Taste of the Sea

January 9, 2025

Snow fell heavily on Sunday morning, blanketing the church yard in a thick layer of white.

Outside the church kitchen, the scene was transformed into a peaceful winter wonderland, setting the stage for the day's lunch preparation.

The main dish of the day was clear cod soup.

Arisup (whose name means "Beautiful Forest") diligently prepared the vegetables for the soup.

This dish, often called jiritang in Japanese, is better referred to by its Korean name, malkeun tang, meaning “clear soup.”

Each week, our chef carefully selects the menu, putting great thought into creating something special.

Thanks to his attention to detail, the menu consistently earns praise from the congregation.

Today, Redford introduced brand-new stainless steel meal trays, which he washed thoroughly using the dishwasher.

The trays were purchased recently after gathering input from the Ever Green members. They’re a hygienic solution for our buffet-style meals and make cleanup much easier.

The highlight of the soup was two enormous codfish, weighing a combined total of 8 kilograms.

The chef, beaming with pride, held up the fish like a fisherman showing off his prized catch.

Using an old, thick chopping board nicknamed the “Go Board Cutting Board” (because it resembles an old Korean board game), the cod was chopped into large pieces for the soup.

To make the broth, we used a wide, deep pot filled with kelp, radish, green chili peppers, and other fresh ingredients.

Once the flavorful broth was ready, we added chopped garlic, parboiled cod, onions, soy sauce, bean sprouts, tofu, scallions, and red chili peppers.

The result was a steaming pot of delicious clear cod soup, perfect for a chilly winter day.

After finishing the kitchen preparations, we joined the 10 a.m. worship service.

The pastor’s sermon, titled “The God Who Restores,” was uplifting and encouraging.

We prayed for a year filled with blessings and answers to our prayers.

The pastor also spoke about the importance of faith and the strength we can draw from God's Word.

Our church has a wonderful program for community Bible reading, where daily scripture readings are shared through the Ever Green group chat, accompanied by professional voice recordings.

Following the service, we celebrated those who completed the Bible reading program last year.

This year’s reward for finishing the program was a high-quality insulated mug, which brought smiles to the recipients’ faces.

We hope even more members participate and complete the program next year.

We also welcomed a new member, Brother Lee Young-soo, a soldier who has committed to attending services faithfully during his time in the military.

As a military church, Ever Green Church exists to share the Gospel with soldiers, offering them hope, salvation, and a vision for their lives.

We pray that many more soldiers will come to know Jesus and grow in faith through our ministry.

Amberjack and Gray Mullet Sashimi

Winter is the ideal season for enjoying amberjack sashimi.

Its rich, tender texture with a slight chewiness makes it a true delicacy this time of year.

The bright red slices on the plate were amberjack, while the white ones were gray mullet.

After saying a prayer of thanksgiving, we enjoyed a delicious lunch.

To accompany the sashimi, Light & Money Transfer prepared a special dipping sauce, along with sesame oil and salt, soy sauce, wasabi, pickled radish, and ginger.

The soldiers thoroughly enjoyed both the sashimi and the clear cod soup.

The amberjack was tender, juicy, and flavorful, while the gray mullet had a mild, chewy texture that paired perfectly with the accompaniments.

The clear cod soup, carefully prepared by our chef with help from Paranbyeol (“Blue Star”), was a standout dish.

Its warm, rich flavor spread through everyone’s body, providing much-needed comfort on a cold day.

Even the side dishes were well thought out—golden napa cabbage paired perfectly with the sashimi, while sweet, juicy mandarins served as a refreshing dessert.

At Ever Green Church, we are blessed with vibrant and bountiful Sunday meals, made possible by the joyful service of our volunteers and the teamwork of many congregation members.

For dessert, we had sweet mandarins.

The refreshing and sweet flavor of the mandarins filled our mouths with delight.

Their crisp, fresh taste was complemented by their wonderful fragrance.

As a military church, we strive to bring the Gospel to soldiers, sharing God’s love, faith, and vision with young souls.

We also welcome residents from the surrounding community to join our 10 a.m. worship service.

We pray to grow as a church that serves both soldiers and the local community, spreading the Good News of Jesus to everyone.
